Earlier in the day, Hall County recorded its first two cases of rabies in 2017, now it has its third.
The first two cases involved skunks in different parts of the county that made contact with a dog in each instance, according to a news release from the county.
The most recent case was contact between a rabid raccoon and a dog in the 5100 block of Young Road in Gainesville. The raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab-Virology Section in Decatur. Hall County Animal Control was advised Thursday that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.
The first incident involving skunks happened on Baker Road near Wallace Road generally southeast of Gainesville. The second happened in the Lula area on Latty Road near Old Cornelia Highway.
Hall County Animal Control also received word Thursday that the skunks, shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur, had tested positive for rabies.
Hall County Animal Services officials reminded pet owners to keep their animals' vaccinations up-to-date. Vaccines are available at the Hall County Animal Shelter for $10 Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1688 Barber Rd, Gainesville.
Crews will place positive alert signs in the areas where the skunks and raccoon were found. Residents in those areas are urged to contact officials if they notice an animal acting abnormally.
