A small plane crashed in Cherokee County overnight, leaving the pilot dead.

The twin engine Cessna reportedly went down around midnight at the end of the runway at the Cherokee County Airport in Ball Ground.

Local authorities are unsure if the plane was attempting to land or take off at the time of the crash, but they told Atlanta media the plane clipped a power pole and landed in a fenced-in retention pond.

CBS46 in Atlanta has identified the pilot as 69-year-old Steven Silver of Woodstock.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
