Baseball: Red Elephants open with shutout win

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville baseball team opened its season with an impressive combined performance on the mound on Wednesday.

Collier Scott and Jay Henshaw co-authored a shutout in a 6-0 defeat of Forsyth Central at Ivey-Watson Field in Gainesville, Scott starting and earning the win with 4 innings pitched. Scott struck out five batters and yielded just one hit. Henshaw also gave up just one hit over 3 innings, earning the save.

Meanwhile, Banks Griffith paced the Red Elephants (1-0) at the plate, going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI. Dalton Kyle also added a hit, two RBI and two stolen bases, while Jared Smith went 2 for 4. Scott also smacked a triple and drove in a run, and Henshaw had a double.

Gainesville will play host to Heritage, Conyers in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
