The Banks County Sheriff's Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating after human remains were discovered in a rural part of the county Sunday night.

Those skeletal remains were located in a wooded area off Ga. 59 near New Salem United Methodist Church, 2170 Ga. 59, Commerce, by someone looking at property they were interested in purchasing.

"Due to the time of discovery, the investigation was halted until daylight hours," said Banks County Sheriff's Lt. Carissa McFaddin. "We resumed our investigation this morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to assist us with examining and processing the scene. Once the scene is completely processed, we will be turning the investigation over to the GBI."

McFaddin said any additional information will come from the GBI at a later time.
