CARNESVILLE — A week after a man and woman were found dead of gunshot wounds in their Franklin County home, Sheriff Steve Thomas has released more details of the case.

“On Dec. 22, in the late afternoon hours, officers with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 9-1-1 all at 300 Neal Little Road in Carnesville regarding a welfare check of family members,” Thomas said in a statement. “Upon arrival by officers, they located a deceased male and female within the dwelling. Officers also located two children of the home, who were asleep in their bedrooms.”

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and its Criminal Investigation Division, the Franklin County Coroner’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded and conducted the investigation of the incident.

Matthew Cody Hart, 29, and Whitney S. Hart, 28, who were married, lived at the residence with their children.

“The preliminary investigation concluded that the case is that of a murder/suicide, where Whitney Hart died as a result of a single gunshot wound and Cody Hart died of a self-inflicted gunshot,” Thomas said.
