HOMER — Josh Shoemaker recently resigned as the Banks County football coach.

Banks County Principal Dr. Joseph Goodroe released a statement Tuesday saying the school had promoted defensive backs coach Chad Cheatham to be the 15th head coach in the program's 52-year history.

Cheatham was an assistant on the Leopards staff coaching the defensive backs.

“We are excited about the future of Banks County (football) under the leadership of Coach Cheatham,” Goodroe said in a brief press release.

However, Cheatham will be the fifth coach for the Leopards since the 2010 season.

Shoemaker will stay on as a Physical Education teacher at Banks County. He said he is not sure what coaching plans are down the road as of now.

“I resigned the position,” Shoemaker said. “It was a very positive experience personally. I can’t say enough about how much fun it was to coach the kids and be a part of this program.

“I have no clue what the future holds (coaching-wise) but I’m sure God has a plan for me and I’ll follow that wherever it leads”

Shoemaker went 12-11 in two seasons in Homer snagging a pair of playoff appearances and finishing second in Region 8-AA in 2016. The Leopards also won their first-ever playoff game in program history in 2016 when KIPP Atlanta was forced to forfeit due to a fight in their regular season finale.
