Representatives of the University of North Georgia, the Hall County School System and Johnson High School gathered at JHS Thursday morning to sign official documents commemorating the newest partnership between the two schools.

UNG officials announced in May that the university had been awarded a $2.6 million Upward Bound Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to be used in Hall and Gilmer counties to "help promising low-income" high school students prepare for college.

UNG will partner with Gilmer County High School and Johnson High to provide 120 students annually with tutoring, counseling and advising to help them succeed academically.

“Part of UNG’s mission is to increase educational attainment across northeast Georgia and strengthen the region's economy,” UNG President Bonita C.Jacobs said at the time the grant was announced. “Through these grants and the Upward Bound program, we will be able to provide vital support to students in our region as they prepare for higher education and future career opportunities.”

Said Schofield "This partnership and the additional resources it provides will create significant opportunities for young men and women to pursue higher education goals they never dreamed were possible." Read more about the Upward Bound Program and UNG's plans for it here.
