The Georgia State Patrol Trooper who was struck and injured by an alleged drunk driver in Forsyth County Monday morning is recuperating following surgery, authorities said.
Trooper 1st Class Aaron DeGourville, 35, of Cumming, was directing traffic in the eastbound lane of Ga. 369/Matt Highway west of Bannister Road when the incident happened around 6:35 a.m.
"He suffered a broken left leg between his ankle and knee," a Tuesday statement from the Georgia Department of Public Safety Public Information Office read.
Authorities described his Monday surgery as successful.
DeGourville has been with the state patrol's Post 37 in Cumming since he graduated from the 97th GSP Trooper School in March of 2016. He served as the class chaplain.
DeGourville was wearing a fluorescent traffic vest as a tow truck loaded a disabled vehicle, according to the department. An eastbound car hit him.
The car's driver, David Michael Sommer, 44, of Cumming, was charged with DUI, reckless driving, failure to obey authorized person directing traffic and serious injury by vehicle.
A spokeswoman for Forsyth County said Sommer, who was employed by the county as a meter reader, turned in his resignation Tuesday morning. He'd been employed by the county since October 2014.
Sommer also had worked as a Forsyth County deputy in the 1990's.
