Authorities arrested the man they believe hit a state trooper who was directing traffic Monday morning in Forsyth County.
The trooper was assisting a motorist and directing traffic on Ga. 369/Matt Highway west of Bannister Road when the incident happened around 6:35 a.m.
"A 2003 BMW 325 was traveling eastbound, driven by David (Michael) Sommer," a statement from the Georgia Department of Public Safety Public Information Office read. "The trooper was in the eastbound lane directing traffic while wearing his reflective traffic vest."
The BMW, driven by David Michael Sommer, hit the trooper, resulting in serious injuries, according to authorities.
"The driver of the BMW was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol," officials go on to say in the statement.
Authorities said the accident report is not complete. They did not immediately release the name of the injured trooper.
Officials with Forsyth County comfirms Sommer is a meter reader with the Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department and has been employed in the department since 2014.
A bond amount for Sommer, 44, was not listed in an online inmate query for the Forsyth County Jail.
