MONROE — Easley Smith scored a pair of touchdowns and Commerce knocked off George Walton Academy 24-13 on the road Friday night in Region 8-A action.

It was a key victory for the Tigers (8-2, 7-2 Region 8-A) who sat 10th in the Class A Public power rankings coming into the regular season finale. The top eight teams receive a first round bye in the playoffs so the Tigers will have to wait to see how the final rankings, due out next week, shake out.

Commerce led 10-0 in the first quarter on the first of Smith's scoring runs and a 28-yard field goal from Eryck Diaz.

George Walton (7-3, 6-3) got on the board scooping up a backwards pass and returning it 20 yards for a score to cut the lead to 10-7. The Tigers answered back late in the half when Nate Ray connected with Kyre Ware for a 70-yard touchdown pass for a 17-6 lead.

It stayed that way until the fourth quarter when Smith scored again to push the Commerce lead to 24-6. The Bulldogs cut it to 24-13 with 3:50 left but could get no closer.
