Lula mayoral candidate withdraws from race just days before election

Posted 6:35PM on Friday 3rd November 2017 ( 6 years ago )

LULA - A three-way race for mayor in Lula is now down to two candidates following the withdrawal of Felton Wood on Friday, Nov. 3.

Wood, who cited personal reasons for withdrawing, was on the Nov. 7 ballot against incumbent Milton Turner and challenger Jim Grier.

"He signed his withdrawal shortly after 5 p.m. today," City Manager Dennis Bergin said Friday night. "Notice of his actions will be communicated to the public, and his name will be crossed off the ballot."

Lula is one of a couple of municipalities in Hall County that still uses paper ballots for voting.

"It is our understanding that votes cast in advance/early voting in his favor will not be counted," Bergin said.

Bergin said City Attorney Blake Poole has given direction to city staff on the matter and will follow up on Monday.

Under Lula's city charter, even had all three candidates remained in the race, the person who receives the most votes wins.
