A chase and subsequent shooting that started in Buford and ended in Braselton has sent a suspect to the hospital, though authorities aren't sure if the suspect was shot by an officer, or if his injuries were self-inflicted.
Friday morning, an officer was notified that a wanted man was at a gas station near the intersection of Buford Highway and Hamilton Mill Road, according to Gwinnett Police Spokeswoman Michele Pihera.
At that point, the officer got into a chase with the male suspect, described as a white man in his 30's, that ended up on Friendship Road near Ga. 211 in Braselton, at which point the officers were able to spin the suspect's car out.
With the suspect now facing the pursuing officers, the suspect allegedly pulled a gun, at which point one of the officers fired a shot toward him.
It's unclear, Pihera said in a Friday afternoon update, whether the suspect, who was shot in his lower jaw and hand, was hit by his own bullet or by the officer's.
"I don't know if he ... pointed it at the officers, but the officers felt that their lives were in jeopardy," said Pihera.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a Braselton-area hospital in stable condition.
The suspect was wanted on a pair of felony charges, Pihera said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate.
This is the second officer-involved shooting of 2017 for Gwinnett County officers.
