TOCCOA — Toccoa businessman and former City Commissioner and Mayor Ferrell Morgan will be remembered in funeral services Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Morgan passed away Sunday at his home after a long illness.

Morgan, 85, was the founder and owner of Morgan Concrete and served for many years on the Toccoa City Commission, and in 2000 and 2004 also served as mayor.

City Manager Billy Morse worked with Morgan during his years on the city commission and says he meant a lot to the city.

“I was here the entire time Ferrell was on the commission,” Morse said. “He did a wonderful job for the city. He meant a lot to this community. He was founder of Morgan Concrete, which has become a major employer and business in our region. I have good memories of Ferrell and the service he gave to our community. I would like to extend our condolences to his family from the City of Toccoa.”

David Austin worked with Morgan for several terms on the city commission and participated in the recent Alzheimer’s walk on behalf of Morgan.

Austin said Morgan’s business expertise made him a valuable contributor to the City.

“I’m sorry to hear of his passing,” Austin said. “We served together for three different terms. Of course, Ferrell was a good businessman having his own company and, being a good businessman, he was able to contribute to the workings of the city. He was an asset.”

City Commissioner Terry Carter said Morgan’s legacy continues to live on through his family.

“I’m saddened to learn of the passing of Ferrell Morgan,” Carter said. “I had the opportunity to work with him on several projects and the hours that he had given to Toccoa and his sacrifices will forever be appreciated. His family continues to give to our community and we’re grateful for that. It’s a sad time for our community.”

Current Toccoa Mayor Jeanette Jamieson credited the city’s sound financial footing to the steps taken by Morgan and the other commissioners during his tenure.

“I think he did a great job as a city commissioner and I’m often reminded that the job we have today has been made much easier by the sound government that was established when people like Ferrell Morgan were on the commission,” Jamieson said. “They left intact so many systems and programs in place that have made our job much easier than it might have been.”

Jamieson noted Morgan’s constant concern for the citizens of Toccoa and recalled a time when he brought flowers to her mother who was very ill.

“There was no reason to do that for my mother,” she remembered. “He was just compassionate. As busy as he was, with all that he had going on, that he took time to bring flowers to my mother is something I will always remember.”

Funeral services for Morgan will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Toccoa. Burial will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens with military honors by VFW Post 4346.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today, Oct. 31, at Whitlock Mortuary in Toccoa.
