A 77-year-old man from Cumming was killed Thursday night when he was hit by a pickup truck while crossing Canton Highway.

The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. when the truck — driven by Rigney Gilbert Hoffman, 19, of Gainesville — struck Paul Carbonara at Canton Highway's intersection with Post Road, according to a news release from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

Carbonara died at the scene.

"The Traffic Specialist Unit is continuing the investigation and preliminary results do not indicate alcohol or drug impairment to be involved. A final determination of cause will likely be concluded in the next two weeks," officials said.

There was no word on whether or not any charges will be filed in the case, which remains under investigation.

Sheriff's officials declined a request for an interview seeking further information.
