Softball: Gainesville, Winder-Barrow split in 8-AAAAAA tourney

WINDER — Gainesville and Winder-Barrow split in the opening round of the Region 8-AAAAAA Tournament.

The two teams are playing a best- 2-of-3 series with the winner moving on to the state tournament.

Gainesville won Game 1, 7-2, behind a solid pitching performance from Lindsey Ledford, who allowed just two runs (1 earned) on seven hits and struck out threee in a complete-game effort.

The Lady Red Elephants scored three runs in the third and two runs each in the fourth and sixth. Sarah Barrett had two hits and two RBI to pace the offense.

The Lady Bulldogs scored once in the fifth and once in the seventh.

Winder-Barrow evened the series in Game 2 with a 10-2 victory. The game was tied at 2 after the first inning but the Lady Bulldoggs scored twice in the third for a 4-2 lead and then invoked the 8-run Mercy Rule with six runs in the fifth.

The two teams will play a deciding Game 3 on Wednesday.
