Improving crosswalks and one street's name discussed by Gainesville City Council

GAINESVILLE – Improvements are coming to five crosswalks in the city of Gainesville.

Public Works Director Chris Rotalsky asked the city council at their work session Thursday morning to transfer funds within his department to cover the estimated $365,000 cost of the project.

“We’re pretty excited about this project,” Rotalsky told council members, “we have actually bid the project out so we know…the anticipated costs.”

A thermoplastic application indicating the designated crosswalk area will be placed on the following intersections:

According to Rotalsky the application process is weather and temperature dependent and all work will be done overnight.  “So we would anticipate starting a little bit later in the spring when there is more consistent temperatures.”

“We are anticipating roughly a week (work time) on each intersection,” Rotalsky added.

Assistant City Manager Angela Shepard said once the crosswalks are laid landscaping will follow.  “The grant that we received from Wells Fargo will help us do some of the landscaping.”

POSSIBLE ADJUSTMENT OF STREET RENAMING

Earlier this week the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board unanimously approved renaming Touchdown Drive adjacent Gainesville High School to Deshaun Watson Drive in honor of the quarterback of the National Champion Clemson Tigers football team.

City Councilman Sam Couvillon asked if the council was allowed to adjust the name slightly once the item came up for final approval.

“Do we have any say in the name or is it just what they send us?” Couvillon queried.

Couvillon asked if council would consider adjusting the recommended name to “Deshaun Watson Pass”, a name better associated with Watson’s football connection.

“And it kind of a short street that you just pass through,” Couvillon added.

City Manager Bryan Lackey said the city council could rename the street to whatever name they preferred.  That decision will be made at their next voting session.
