In remembrance and observance of American civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Brenau University in Gainesville will hold a winter convocation at 12:45 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, in Pearce Auditorium.

“This is to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. and the large and lasting role he played in social justice,” said Jessica Bowling, coordinator for student services operations. “We come together as a university and the students play a major role. It’s very uplifting.”

The university was closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 16., so university officials set aside the convocation Thursday for day students, faculty and staff to celebrate King's legacy. The convocation will include celebratory performances by the Brenau Gospel Choir and several Brenau dance students.

Bowling said the theme of the event is “United Toward the Dream.”

The convocation will include an address from keynote speaker, Brenau alumna Tomyka Chaney, an award-winning Atlanta entrepreneur and business development partner with more than 20 years experience in her field. In 2009, Chaney founded Best Boom! Strategies, a training and development firm that eases career transition for executives. In 2012, she expanded the business by adding a training and development center offering online courses, workshops and training for project management.
