Gwinnett County firefighters have spent the Wednesday morning rush hour battling three separate brush fires on the shoulder of I-85 southbound between Spout Springs Road and Old Flowery Branch Road in unincorporated Buford

Gwinnett County Fire Department Capt. Tommy Rutledge arrived at the scene just before 6 a.m.

The lanes of 85 south were closed as a result of smoke from the fires.

"Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby residential area," Rutledge said in an email statement. "Georgia Forestry was called to the scene to cut a fire break around the area with a tractor."

The fires were brought under control by 6:30 a.m., according to Rutledge, but fire crews remained on the scene to extinguish hot spots.

No one was injured

There's no word yet on a cause.
