CLARKESVILLE — At its first meeting of the year, the Habersham County Commission unanimously elected Commissioner Victor Anderson to serve as chairman of that body for 2017.

"I'm honored and I'm humbled, and look forward to a very busy year for our commission and the county," Anderson said following Monday night's meeting.

By a 3-2 vote, Commissioner Ed Nichols was elected vice chairman for 2017.

"Ed has a lot of experience on the board," Anderson said. "He is one of our longest-term board members. He's seen a lot, he's been involved in a lot on the commission, but also in his personal life as a human resources specialist and a consultant and speaker on those matters. I look forward to working with Ed and using that background and resource that he has to help achieve things in the county."

Anderson had positive things to say about 2016 Commission Chairwoman Natalie Crawford.

"Commissioner Crawford did a very good job as far as keeping us all together, united and focused, as well as providing leadership," Anderson said. "One of the secondary functions of the chairperson, under the constitutional act that created our county, is that the chairperson also serves as the chief executive officer for the county, which means that you are the face and the voice. Chairman Crawford did an excellent job of projecting a good image for our county, and keeping the board on track and focused."
