A man driving the wrong way on I-85 in Jackson County early Friday morning was killed when he hit an oncoming vehicle.

Jackson County authorities said the incident started just before 3:30 a.m. when a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office noticed a vehicle driving erratically on the interstate near the Dry Pond Road exit. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away from the officer and left the interstate at the Jefferson exit. Authorities said after the driver made several turns on US 129 north, he returned to I-85, driving north in the southbound lanes.

At 3:43 a.m., the wrong-way driver hit a southbound vehicle near mile marker 143. The at-fault driver's vehicle caught fire, killing the driver. The person in the other vehicle suffered serious injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The names of those involved in the incident have not been released.

I-85 north and southbound were closed to traffic for almost three hours during the Friday morning rush hour.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol are conducting the investigation.
