Governor Nathan Deal's Office announced Tuesday that two communities in our area will get a share of $37 million in federal government assistance for enhancing local economies.

Banks County and the city of Blue Ridge are in line for $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through Georgia's Community Development Block Grant program.

"The projects funded by this program will stimulate economic development in these communities and enhance the quality of life for all Georgians," Gov. Nathan Deal said for a news release.  "This program allows cities and counties to direct federal funding to address critical community needs, maximizing opportunities for citizens and ensuring that Georgia remains a top state for business."

In Banks County, the money is earmarked for a senior center.  In Blue Ridge, the money is for water improvements.

Under the 2016 awards, 74 Georgia communities will receive a total of $37.7 million in assistance to enhance their local economies through the program.
