The Good News Clinic handed out its annual volunteer awards at Thursday's fundraising dinner at First Baptist Church.

Dr. Jim Butts received the prestigious Sam Poole Volunteer of the Year Award thanks, in large part, to his 10 years of service as the volunteer medical director for the clinic. Butts helped ease the transition after the passing of Poole, the clinic's first medical director and whom the award is named after, in 2006.

"The Good News Clinic kind of needed a family practice type thing," Butts said to the audience upon receiving his award. "I thought about it, and I thought 'If I should ever meet Sam Poole in heaven and didn't take this job, I'd regret it.'"

Comedy magician Chipper Lowell, who has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, closed out the night's entertainment.
