NEWNAN — Recent Gainesville High golf standout Spencer Ralston made it two Red Elephants in the 2016 United States Amateur on Tuesday.
The University of Georgia-bound Ralston shot a 36-hole 2-under-par at the United States Golf Association (USGA) qualifier at Newnan Country Club, securing a spot in a two-man playoff for the tournament's fourth and final qualifying spot. Ralston then defeated Georgia State's JJ Grey with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Ralston joined former high school teammate and current Western Carolina golfer Jackson Bishop in the US Amateur field -- Bishop had earned a spot in the field on July 20.
One of the most prestigious amateur golf events in the world, the US Amateur will be held August 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.
The last Gainesville High golfer to make the US Amateur before the duo was Stuart Moore (GHS, 2001) in 2004 while a member of Auburn's golf team.
