Passengers on board a charter bus traveling down I-85 near Buford got a big scare when the bus caught on fire Friday afternoon.

The bus was traveling as part of a group of three charter buses, according to Gwinnett County Fire Department officials, when for unknown reasons a fire started at the rear of the bus - possibly in the engine compartment or a wheel well.

When fire crews arrived just after 5:30 p.m., they found flames showing from the bus. They said all 48 people on board managed to exit safely.

The passengers were placed on the other two buses and were able to continue on their trip. Officials said they did not know where the buses were headed or where they were traveling from.

I-85 at the Gravel Springs Road overpass had to be shut down for a time - right in the height of afternoon rush hour.
