There’s something inspiring about opening a new-ish version of Microsoft Word.
It opens on a blue screen, then “Word,” comes into view and you think, “this is where I’m supposed to be: word.”
I digress, remember in the blog about what went down Monday when I outlined a running theme of tone deafness?
Right, that kept up on Tuesday (but luckily not with Kirby Smart and the Bulldog contingency, which I’ll get to shortly), as did the theme of talking a lot while saying nothing (again, not with the Bulldogs).
Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen sported Yeezy Boost kicks at the podium Tuesday (yea, me either), but dropped that swag ball like Tony Romo on a game-winning field goal snap when talking about Jeffery Simmons. You know Simmons, a 5-star recruit admitted to Mississippi State despite a video existing that shows him hitting a woman repeatedly while she was on the ground (Simmons has been dealt a one-game suspension).
Mullen was asked Tuesday, “What if it was a member of your actual family on the ground?”
Mullen: “I don’t think it would be my family. I don’t deal in hypotheticals, really, so, um – but anybody, I mean, in the video, I don’t know that my family would be in that situation, to be honest with you.”
‘Preciate the honesty and oh by the way, you deal in hypotheticals for a living, it’s called situational drills. Also, could you pinpoint what makes your family immune to violence?

A couple of bullet points from Day 2
- The guy sporting the bedazzled Alabama championship belt continues to elude my grasp. I first spotted my prey of mockery on Monday and was so taken aback, that the show (Game On with Katie B. Davis 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on 1240 ESPN Radio) literally stopped. This dude walks around with a WWE-style championship belt either slung over his shoulder or around his waist, depending on whether he’s strutting through radio row or around the food court in the Galleria. The belt, might I add, is shiny white with the Alabama “A” bedazzled in gold all over it. I’m thinking he might be the same man who hollered “Roll Tide” at Gus Malzahn on Monday when the coach had no more walked in the door. I will find the bedazzled Alabama championship belt guy and I will…probably take a selfie, just me and the belt.
- It was Derek Mason in the elevator Monday, Greg McElroy on Tuesday, but I didn’t interact because I hadn’t had breakfast yet and was hangry.
- On Monday night Morgan and I had dinner at Merk’s in the hotel and watched the Bachelorette, but not by choice. Clay Travis – uh huh, that Clay Travis – had rented out the big tv in the place for he and his buddies to watch. I didn’t understand then, and I still don’t nearly 24 hours later
- Got the chance to interview Georgia players Dominick Sanders and Jeb Blazevich, both of which you’ll be able to hear on Wednesday’s Game On presented by Gainesville Mechanical. Both were incredibly eloquent and even more polite. Much like coach Mason deemed himself to be Monday, both Sanders and Blazevich were just good dudes.
- Paul Finebaum gives incredibly incensed looks when you stare at him while he’s doing a radio show…I mean, I HEARD that was the case
- Vultures descending on a carcass, that’s lobby people when a coach walks in the front door of the Hyatt Regency, just ask Kirby Smart. If they don’t get what they want on initial contact, they lie in wait at the base of the escalators that lead to a fan’s Never Never Land, otherwise known as the unfettered access afforded the SEC Network and ESPN. There are literally guards at the base of the escalators in case one of the inmates escapes the asylum, or the small roped off area where they’re allowed to gather (I don’t go in there).
