A 51-year-old bridge near Statham and Winder will close for two months this summer as crews build a new bridge in its place.

The Beech Creek bridge will be closed for 60 days starting June 1, according to a press release from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

In preparation for that closure, detour signs will be put in place on Monday , May 23 to alert drivers to the detour they will have to take while the work is being completed.

Traffic will be diverted (see photo) to Ga. 11 south, to Ga. 211/53 south and onto Ga. 82 east and Ga. 211 north.

That detour is 10.7 miles total, and electronic signs will be installed during the process.

The new bridge, which is scheduled for completion on July 31, will also be a two-lane bridge.
