MT. AIRY — A newlywed couple on the way to their honeymoon was involved in a serious-injury wreck in Habersham County Monday afternoon.

Richard Lee Phillips, 67, of Newark, Del., and Sandra Kay Hullings, 65, of Pen Yan, N.Y., were married over the weekend and spent Sunday night in Toccoa before heading to Atlanta for a honeymoon, said Trooper 1st Class John Crawford of Georgia State Patrol Post 7.

Those plans changed when Phillips' 2007 Hyundai Tuscon was struck by another vehicle on Ga. 365 southbound at Jess Kinney Road near Mt. Airy Monday afternoon.

According to Crawford, a red 2013 Kia Soul driven by Nabuko McClain-Adams, 41, of Clarkesville came off Hulsey Road and into the median crossing on Ga. 365. After stopping in the median, McClain Adams' car struck the side of Phillips' SUV, which then overturned two and one-half times, resulting in a serious hand injury to Hullings-Phillips.

Hullings-Phillips was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was admitted and taken into surgery, Crawford said. Phillips only had a complaint of injury and was treated and released from Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

McClain-Adams was taken by private vehicle to Habersham Medical Center with a complaint of injury. She was cited for failure to yield right of way when crossing, Crawford said.

The southbound lanes of Ga. 365 were closed for an extended time, with traffic being routed onto the concrete median swale. The wreck was cleared just before 5:30 p.m.

A New York woman suffered a serious hand injury in a two-vehicle wreck on Ga. 365 at Jess Kinney Road near Mt. Airy Monday afternoon.
One woman was seriously injured and two others complained of injury in a two-vehicle wreck on Ga. 365 at Kinney Mill Road Monday afternoon.
Southbound traffic on Ga. 365 was routed through the concrete swale in the median during the investigation and cleanup of Monday's wreck.
A two-vehicle wreck with serious injuries closed the southbound lanes of Ga. 365 between Tom Arrendale Interchange and Cody Road Monday afternoon.
