A tractor trailer driver from New York state has been charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree in the death of a 91-year-old Commerce man.

The Georgia State Patrol said Charles Verde died Monday morning when he ran underneath the tractor trailer on State Route 98 near Mize Road. Troopers said the 18-wheeler, driven by Matthew Walker, 51, of Riverhead, New York, was backing improperly from the eastbound lane of SR 98 across the westbound lane of SR 98 onto Mize Road when the fatal crash occurred. They said Verde died at the scene.

The collision happened just before 11 a.m. Monday.
