The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board will hear a request next month to name a street leading to the Gainesville High School campus after Deshaun Watson, a former quarterback for the Red Elephants and the Clemson Tigers.

Watson, who was this year's first runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, attended Gainesville City Schools for his entire public school career, graduating early to enroll at Clemson University. Watson completed his coursework at Clemson in just three years. He is expected to be a top pick for the 2017 NFL Draft.

The applicant, Rainmaker & Associates, proposes to rename Touchdown Drive, a 180± linear feet road, that leads from Pearl Nix Parkway to the Gainesville High School campus. The new road name would be Deshaun Watson Drive. The application indicates there are currently no properties that have addresses from Touchdown Drive. The road is used as an access point for students and parents.

The planning board hears the request at a January 17 meeting at 5:30 at the Gainesville Justice Center.
