Work on Sugar Hill Greenway project to start in the new year

The new year is expected to bring new construction projects to Sugar Hill, including work on the first three legs of a 16.5-mile multi-use trail that will eventually circle the city.

The Sugar Hill Greenway will run from the downtown area along Level Creek Road towards E.E. Robinson Park, then circle back towards level creek into some property owned by the city, according to Paul Radford, Sugar Hill city manager.

"It's going to be, probably, a five to seven year project (in total), but we'll start those first three legs that will connect downtown to some parks, and looping over to a road that bisects the city called Whitehead Road," said Radford in a phone interview.

The first three legs should be finished in 2017, at a cost of $7 million in the city's capital improvements budget.

The trail's master plan (see photo) eventually calls for it to run through Settles Bridge Park, Orr's Ferry, Gary Pirkle Park, the Sugar Hill Golf Course and Sycamore Elementary School.
