The man who was the first full-time pathologist at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville has died.

Dr. Hamil Murray, 94, died Monday, October 24 at his home.

A publication celebrating the 50th anniversary of NGMC said Murray joined the medical center staff in 1954.

"I had started out to study internal medicine," Murray said at the time. "I took a pathology residency as part of my training and found I really liked it."

Murray said when he began working at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, all lab testing was done by hand.

"Our reagents were prepared by hand and from recipes. We had only the most basic laboratory equipment. We had a small room adjacent to the main lab where we drew blood from donors," Murray said.

Murray was a native of Danielsville.

Funeral services are being handled by Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Service details are pending.
This photo of Dr. Hamil Murray appeared in a 2001 Northeast Georgia Medical Center publication celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the hospital.
