Softball: Buford sweeps S. Effingham for 12th straight trip to Columbus

BUFORD — Buford swept South Effingham 15-2 and 2-1 Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA state tournament.

In Game 1, the Lady Wolves (28-2) opened with an 8-run first inning and then cruised to the win in four innings. Junior Arielle Oda smacked a two-RBI single in the fourth inning to invoke the Mercy Rule. Mariah Wicker had four RBI and Katie Perkins had three RBI to pace the offense. Junior Logan Caymol (13-1) got the win allowing two runs on two hits while striking out six.

In the seocnd game, Buford junior Kelsey Bennett belted a solo home run in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. Junior Hannah Jo Hyatt had a hit and one RBI as well. Junior Ansley Byers (11-1) got the win scattering two hits.

This will be the 12th consecutive trip to Columbus for Buford program, 13th in the past 15 seasons. The Lady Wolves are looking for their 10th straight state championship. They will take on Starr’s Mill out of Region 3-AAAAA at 2 p.m. on Thursday
