At least two communities in north Georgia will continue the tradition of marches and special services in memory of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther, King, Jr.
Northeast Georgia Peace Walk steps off Sunday in Clarkesville
The 30th annual Northeast Georgia Peace Walk takes places in Clarkesville Sunday at 2 p.m. According to a press release, the theme of the 2016 commemoration is "Many Waves, One Ocean: Joying in the Sea of Humanity."
“Over the years we have worked to bring diversity to the celebration – and a few times have managed to get Hispanic or Laotian groups involved, but never both together,” said Julianne Wilson, one of 16 organizers of the 2016 event. “This year we will have black, white, Hispanic, Laotian and Native Americans all participating in song or inspirational readings during the celebration."
Organizers say participants should gather at the gazebo on the Clarkesville square and then walk to Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church for a special program.
Newtown Florist Club again sponsors Gainesville King Day event
Gainesville's parade begins at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Butler Center on Athens Street and winds up at Fair Street School for a King Day program.
