Gainesville police investigating church vandalism

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department is investigating racial slurs that were painted over night on First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Boulevard. 

At around 8:00am Saturday morning, officers responded to a call at the First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Boulevard, in regards to a damage report. Sergeant Kevin Holbrook claims that  an individual, or individuals, painted vulgarities and racial slurs on and around the church overnight. 

"Although this is disturbing for the community, we do not feel that there is a direct threat associated with this crime."

Holbrook added that several community members as well as local businesses were working to remove the paintings from the church as early as Saturday morning. The Gainesville Police Department is looking into more information regarding two possible suspects.Anyone with information is asked to contact Gainesville Police at 770-534-5254.
