Collins takes on Planned Parenthood at Judiciary Hearing

Posted 3:05PM on Wednesday 9th September 2015 ( 8 years ago )

WASHINTON D.C.—Ninth District Congressman Doug Collins took to the microphone Wednesday and spoke against Planned Parenthood at a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

The Republican from Gainesville said the recent viral videos posted online that allegedly show abortion clinics selling fetal organs are "abhorrent" regardless of context.

"I'm not sure how you can put any of these in context. I don't care how you want to spin it. What was on those videos ... there's no way you put those in context," said Collins.

He said he and his wife were encouraged to have an abortion when they learned there unborn daughter had spina bifida, a birth defect that often causes paralysis, among other things.

"My wife went back to work, and in a time of much emotional turmoil, a colleague of her's said 'You know, you have choices'," said Collins. "My wife finally figured out what (her colleague) was trying to tell her: 'You can go kill your child.' When my wife understood that, she said, 'You know you're talking about my baby. Not a fetus, a baby.'"

He said the main issue is that abortion clinics disregard life, and instead focus on the child's potential quality of life.
