GAINESVILLE — It's almost time for an annual clean-up event for Lake Lanier, and this year the effort is going high-tech.
The Lake Lanier Association will host the
27th Annual Shore Sweep on Saturday, September 26, and this year, LLA is using a new mobile app to help pinpoint trashy spots around the lake.
TrashOut allows for reporting trash around the lake prior to the event. An LLA press release said knowing where the trash is in advance will enable the group to better dispatch volunteers on the day of Shore Sweep. Organizers said they already have more 200 reports of trash locations on Lake Lanier via the TrashOut app.
LLA said a typical Shore Sweep attracts more than 1,000 volunteers, who have collected an average of 30 tons of trash along the shores of Lake Lanier in past years.
Shore Sweep will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 26. Volunteers, who are not required to register ahead of time, are asked report to a participating location to pick up trash bags and a shore line area assignment for trash collection. All volunteers turning in at least one full bag of trash will receive a t-shirt.
There are 12 locations around Lake Lanier are participating including: Balus Creek and Big Creek Boat Ramps, Aqualand, Bald Ridge, Gainesville, and Port Royale marinas, Lake Lanier Islands, Clarks Bridge, Don Carter, Gwinnett, Longwood, and War Hill Parks.
