TOCCOA - The Georgia State Patrol continues to look for a driver who crashed his car into a tree and left his passenger trapped and seriously injured near Toccoa early Tuesday.

Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa said troopers were notified of the wreck on Georgia Highway 336 (Brookhaven Circle) in Stephens County at 1:45 a.m.

Johnson said a 2005 Toyota Camry owned by Sharad Phapak of Tifton was traveling south on Brookhaven Circle (Georgia 336) when the car ran off the west shoulder of the road, crossed back over and ran off the east shoulder. The driver lost control and the car traveled down an embankment, striking a tree with its front end.

The driver fled the scene on foot, and left the injured passenger, identified by Johnson as 25-year-old Alexander Gober of Toccoa, trapped. Gober had to be extricated by rescue personnel.

Gober was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where Johnson said he was listed in stable condition as of 5:38 a.m. Tuesday.

The Georgia State Patrol's aviation division was requested to assist in the search for the driver, but that person was not located, Johnson said. The investigation is ongoing to locate the driver.
