TOCCOA - A Stephens County deputy sheriff was injured when he was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night.

Sr. Trooper Jason Stephens of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa provided details.

Stephens said Stephens County Sheriff's Office units had been on a call on Whisnant Street.

As Deputy David Kiser left that location, he stopped his patrol car in his lane to retrieve an item from the road.

When Kiser exited his vehicle, he was struck by a 2006 Ford Econoline van driven by 64-year-old Norman Stanley Wampfler of Toccoa, Stephens said. No charges are pending against Wampfler.

Kiser suffered upper extremity injuries and was taken by ambulance to Stephens County Hospital, Stephens said. He was treated and released.

The incident happened at 10:09 p.m.
