CANTON — Firefighters were able to rescue a puppy from a deep well in Cherokee County by lowering a firefighter into the hole to retrieve the animal.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1NGDbIv) that the yellow Labrador Retriever was rescued Sunday morning, after it fell into the 75-foot well in Cherokee County.

Cherokee County fire spokesman Tim Cavender said the dog was given oxygen and "appeared to be OK."

Authorities say firefighters built a tripod over the hole and then lowered firefighter Brendan O'Brien into it. He was raised back up to the surface -- with the puppy in hand -- within a few minutes.
