CLARKESVILLE - The City of Clarkesville has the second best drinking water in Georgia.

That's the recognition members of the city's water treatment department received Monday night.

Kelly Comstock of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals presented two awards to staff members during Monday night's city council meeting.

"You should be very, very proud of your water department," Comstock told Mayor Terry Greene and council members.

Comstock said a panel of professionals from throughout the state come together and rank all the drinking water from the different utilities.

"I'm honored to say that the City of Clarkesville won first place for their district in terms of drinking water taste test from this vote of their peers," Comstock said.

From there, the city's entry went on to the state-level competition.

"Out of all the utilities in the state of Georgia, you came in second place," Comstock said. "You should be very proud."

Additionally, the city received the Gold Award, which recognizes a utility that maintains compliance 100 percent of the time during a calendar year.

"That means every drop of water that's left your facility 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, has met state drinking water requirements," Comstock said. "It's very prestigious to be able to do that and you should be very proud of your staff for being able to attain it."

Following the meeting, Clarkesville Water Plant Superintendent Nancy Gosnell discussed the achievements.

"It just says we're doing our job and that we're doing it very well," Gosnell said. "We're supplying the best water possible to the city of Clarkesville."
