GAINESVILLE - A fire at a private landfill sent smoke into the sky southeast of Gainesville Saturday morning.

Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith said RTS Landfill, located off Monroe Drive, told fire crews responding to the scene around 6 o'clock Saturday morning that their employees could handle the situation using the company's bulldozers on site.

After RTS refused assistance from Gainesville Fire crews, the units left the location, that according to Smith.

Smith pointed out that the facility is not the county owned landfill but a privately operarted landfill service.
