LILBURN -Gwinnett County police have located an 8-year-old girl that had been reported as missing Tuesday evening.

According to a media release issued Tuesday evening by Cpl. Deon Washington with the Gwinnett County Police Department (GCPD), authorities were initially called to Castlewood Drive in Lilburn shortly after 5 p.m.

Washington said the call came from the grandmother of a young girl who was thought to be missing. The woman told police that local children had seen her granddaughter, Alida Hightower, get off her school bus around 3:40 p.m. and begin walking home. This was, for a time, the last known instance of the girl's location.

A follow-up release e-mailed to media outlets Tuesday night said that Hightower had been safely located roughly two to three hours after the initial report. Washington said the girl was found with a family friend, but he did not disclose any other information about the case.
