WINDER - A Barrow County home was heavily damaged early Monday morning by a fire sparked by a wood burning stove that was left unattended.

According to the release from Barrow County EMS Lt. Scott Dakin, the home in the 200 block of Hillside Court NW was heavily damaged.

"Upon arrival of firefighters, the home was heavily involved in fire. Crews went into a defensive attack due to the amount of fire," said Dakin.

Several hours later, the home and contents were under control, but the home was heavily damaged and displaced four adults. The cause of the fire, the wood burning stove, was located in the rear of the home.

As the temperatures drop, Dakin said the wood-burning stove, like other alternative heat sources, should be used with caution.

“With colder weather here we want to remind citizens to use caution when heating their homes with wood burning stoves,” stated Dakin. “You need to have your stove and pipes cleaned and inspected to ensure they are sealed and clear from creosote build up.”
