JEFFERSON — Two teenage brothers, both students at Jefferson High School, were killed in a two vehicle crash on US Highway 129 Wednesday night.
The Georgia State Patrol said troopers were called to the crash site at 7:07 p.m.
They said a 2006 Toyota Corolla being driven by William John Trimble, 17, of Jefferson was traveling northbound on 129 and turned left into the path of a large box truck at Old Pendergrass Road. Trimble's brother, 15-year-old Alexander Trimble, was a passenger in the car and died at the scene, acccording to investigators.
William Trimble was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was placed on life support; he died Thursday morning, according to the Jackson County Coroner.
"Substantial damage had occurred to both vehicles and the occupants of the passenger car were severely entrapped. The incident required extensive extrication efforts to free the trapped victims," Jackson County Emergency Services Director Steve Nichols stated.
The box truck driver was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center, according to Nichols.Troopers said the truck driver is not believed to be at fault in the crash.
A secretary at Jefferson High School said Thursday morning additional counselors are at Jefferson High School to work with students and staff who need extra support.
William Trimble was a senior at Jefferson High, while his brother Alex was a sophomore.
