STATHAM - A Statham police officer is recovering from injuries he received Friday while trying to arrest a DUI suspect.

Statham Police Chief Allan Johntson said Marc Lofton suffered a fracture to one of his arms after the suspect, who was not identified, "became physically aggressive, taking a swing" at him.

"Officer Lofton avoided the initial punch but was struck by a second," Johnston added. "The suspect was taken to the ground by officer Lofton and a Barrow sheriff's deputy (at which time) officer Lofton sustained a fracture to the upper arm'

Johnston said Lofton was treated at a hospital and released.

He has been with the police department four months.
