LAWRENCEVILLE—A Flowery Branch woman faces charges in Gwinnett County for allegedly depositing counterfeit checks in Norcross and Peachtree Corners.

Derona Carol Brown, 62, faces two counts of first-degree forgery, three counts of theft by deception and three counts of false identification.

The charges stem from two separate incidents, according to Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera.

The first occured November 26, 2014 at the SunTrust branch on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Peachtree Corners. Brown used an alias to deposit $140,000 into her account.

She used the same tactic on December 2, 2014 at the SunTrust on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, depositing $98,000. Once the checks cleared with the bank, Brown would then withdraw money from the account; she withdrew most of it before the bank finally closed the account on December 4, 2014.

"In some situations, banks will try to do their own investigations, prior to contacting the police department. They'll try to identify the suspect and make contact with them ... before they call police," said Pihera. She said SunTrust did just that in this case.

Brown posted bond Friday.
