GAINESVILLE - This month marks the 200th anniversary of the national anthem.

It was in September 1814 that Francis Scott Key penned the poem that would later be set to music and named "The Star Spangled Banner." He did so as he watched the country's flying in the heat of battle at Baltimore's Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812.

At 12:30 in Kenyon Plaza on Friday, September 12, the Johnson High School band will perform "The Star Spangled Banner" at a community celebration hosted by the GFWC Gainesville Phoenix Woman's Club.

Organizers say the celebration will be brief in hopes of attracting people who are on their lunch break.
