OAKWOOD - A Clermont man was killed in a Wednesday afternoon crash involving his vehicle and a tractor trailer on Munday Mill Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

According to investigating troopers, a tractor trailer, a Freightliner driven by a Cornelia operator, traveling east through Oakwood on Mundy Mill Road attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Thurmond Tanner Parkway; the semi-truck then struck a westbound Chevrolet Silverado that had run a red light on Mundy Mill Road.

The GSP reported that the front end of the tractor trailer struck the truck on its left side; the driver of the pick-up truck, 49-year-old John Morrow, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said they suspect - but have not confirmed - that Morrow was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

As a result of the crash, the tractor trailer began leaking fuel onto the roadway, leading authorities to shut the roadway down for several hours while HAZMAT crews cleaned up the spill. Hall County dispatchers indicated that roughly 300 gallons of diesel fuel leaked onto the roadway.

The fatal accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
