ATLANTA (AP) -- First lady Michelle Obama heads to Georgia next week and will be helping raise money and support for Senate candidate Michelle Nunn, who hopes to win a key seat for Democrats this year.

Obama arrives Monday and will first appear with Education Secretary Arne Duncan at an Atlanta high school to highlight her initiative aimed at increasing access and opportunity for students.

Later, she will attend an afternoon fundraiser with Nunn and headline an evening voter registration rally.

The Georgia race is among a dozen with national implications as Republicans seek to gain control of the Senate. Republicans can't afford to lose the open seat and Democrats consider Nunn, the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn, one of their best recruits nationally.

She faces Republican businessman David Perdue in November.
