No wrongdoing in handling child immigrants

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Homeland Security Department's internal watchdog says it could not substantiate 16 complaints by advocacy groups who accused the government of abusing unaccompanied child immigrants apprehended along the Mexican border.<br /> <br /> The department's inspector general's office launched its investigation after the American Civil Liberties Union and four other organizations in June alleged widespread abuses by federal immigration authorities in border-area detention facilities.<br /> <br /> Inspector General John Roth says in a memo to DHS Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson that federal prosecutors reviewed his agency's findings and declined to prosecute because of a lack of criminal activity. The memo was made public Tuesday.<br /> <br /> Roth says 100 more complaints are still being investigated by officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and the department's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.
